I understand… Mauricio Pochettino sends message to Tottenham fans after Barnsley attendance

Tottenham Hotspur beat Barnsley 1-0 on the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has told Sky Sports that he understands the drop in attendance for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Barnsley.

After a 0-0 draw with Swansea City on Saturday evening, Spurs fans were once again given cause for concern about the club’s fortunes at Wembley Stadium, even after beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 there in the Champions League last week.

Pitted against Championship side Barnsley in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup, Spurs were strong favourites for the game – but they only just edged through the encounter.

Dele Alli’s second half strike proved to be enough for Tottenham, as they claimed a narrow 1-0 win at Wembley Stadium to make it through to the next round of the competition.

It wasn’t quite as comfortable as Tottenham would have wanted, but having made a number of changes – such as handing first starts to Juan Foyth and Fernando Llorente – manager Mauricio Pochettino will just be happy with another win, especially at Wembley.

Tottenham are still adjusting to life at their temporary home, and fans seemingly prioritised other games, given the 23,926 attendance against Barnsley – though that’s understandable given the cost of Premier League and Champions League games.

Pochettino was asked about the attendance after the final whistle, telling Sky Sports that he understands that not everybody can make it to every single home game.

Pochettino added a thank you message to all the fans who did attend the game, stating that they were behind Spurs throughout and gave Tottenham the support they needed.

“I understand,” Pochettino said. “I’d like to say thank you to all the fans that were here. Maybe it wasn’t possible to come. I understand that it’s so difficult for the fans sometimes to come to every single game. I want to say thank you to our fans. I know they are behind us and translate their support,” he added.
