Liverpool fans have been given some interesting news by Jan Aage Fjørtoft regarding Jorg Schmadtke’s imminent arrival at Anfield.
The 59-year-old is set to be appointed as Liverpool’s new Director of Football after Julian Ward opted to resign from the role, roughly a year after taking the reigns from Michael Edwards.
Dominic King of the Daily Mail has claimed that Schmadtke will sign a three-year contract at Liverpool, although Fjørtoft has now shared an interesting update which goes against that.
What’s the story?
Well, the Norwegian journalist believes the German will only be arriving on a short-term deal to help Liverpool navigate through the upcoming transfer window.
Fjørtoft wrote on Twitter: “I understand it’s three months deal. Just helping Liverpool out in the coming transfer window!”
Now, that is a very different situation to what the Daily Mail are reporting – to say the least.
If Fjørtoft is correct, it would suggest that Liverpool have failed to hire their primary targets for the Director of Football role, and have simply turned to a temporary fix.
Hopefully, Liverpool can offer some clarity on the situation with an official announcement soon.
Schmadtke arrival is mixed news for Liverpool
Schmadtke’s imminent arrival seems to have divided the fanbase as supporters research the 59-year-old online.
The main talking point is the fact that he sold Victor Osimhen for just £3m during his time at VfL Wolfsburg, with the Nigeria international now among Europe’s best strikers after firing Napoli to the Serie A title.
However, there have also been success stories.
Schmadtke’s work at Alemannia Aachen, Hannover 96 and Cologne saw all three sides qualify for Europe without spending huge sums of money.
Therefore, you can see why Jürgen Klopp has moved to bring his fellow countryman to Anfield, and only time will tell if he can enjoy more success in his latest role.
