Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has claimed that Bill Kenwright is now on board with the idea of Rafa Benitez becoming Everton’s new manager.

Castles has previously claimed that Kenwright was big on the idea of bringing either David Moyes or Roberto Martinez back to the club, but now he’s got favourable words to say about Benitez taking over.

What’s been said?

Castles says that a move for Nuno Espirito Santo is moving forward, but there is still a bit of a dispute going on behind the scenes at Goodison.

“The discissions with Nuno came in the midst of what we’ve described as a big internal dispute at Everton. You have different camps within the boardroom. You have Bill Kenwright who has been trying to get David Moyes and has been pushing for Roberto Martinez. I understand he now has favourable words for the idea of bringing Rafael Benitez back to Merseyside into the Everton dugout,” Castles said.

Controversial

Kenwright, as an Everton man, should know the pitfalls to appointing Benitez as the new boss.

Yes, he’s a fantastic manager, but due to his links with Liverpool, you have to feel that this appointment would go down like a lead balloon.

The 61-year-old is a former Champions League winning boss and an La Liga winner, so there’s no doubting his credentials, however, due to his previous Merseyside links, there have to be questions around whether or not Everton fans would accept him.

It remains to be seen who Everton appoint, but it seems as though Benitez is one of the front-runners for the job.
