Tottenham defender Emerson Royal has taken to Instagram after he was left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad – posting a mature and decent response to his omission, understanding Tite’s decision and saying he will support the squad.

Royal, 23, joined Tottenham from Barcelona in the summer of 2021 and it is fair to say he has not convinced Spurs fans. Not just the fans, but Antonio Conte too. It is clear that he is one of the weaknesses in Tottenham’s side right now.

So much so, that Matt Doherty started towards the end of last season over Royal, before picking up an injury. Spurs have been strongly linked with a move for Inter Milan and Netherlands flyer Denzel Dumfries, as per Italian site CMW.

Brazil boss Tite announced his Brazil squad on Monday. He decided to give Dani Alves a swansong in the World Cup at the age of 39, as has Juventus right-back Danilo. It sees Royal miss out. He posted a touching message on Instagram.

“Thank you for everyone’s messages. My dream continues. I understand and respect all decisions. I will be here rooting for great friends and above all for our country,” Royal said on his Instagram story, following the decision.

It is the right decision by Tite. International managers need to be picking players in good form. For the 18 months Royal has spent at Spurs, he has not been good enough. He has not proven his £26million transfer fee from Barcelona.

The advantage Royal has, is that he is still young. He has the time in his career to turn things around, and he is working under one of the best defensive managers in world football in Antonio Conte. Royal needs consistency, but has time.
