Arsenal supporters might not readily admit it very often.
But the truth is, Emi Martinez is a brilliant goalkeeper.
The Argentina international has become a pantomime figure among Arsenal fans following a number of interviews given since leaving the North Londoners to join Aston Villa in 2020.
Him coming up against his former team presented an interesting subplot at Villa Park this afternoon.
However, the 29-year-old reminded his detractors that he remains an exceptional goalkeeper.
Arsenal could and would’ve taken a surprise lead in the first half – well, before they did – if not for the big man.
Bukayo Saka’s teasing cross was very nearly diverted into his own net by Ezri Konsa, but cat-like reflexes from Martinez saw him paw the ball out for a corner.
Lesser goalkeepers wouldn’t have got down as quick and Jim Beglin, speaking during commentary on Optus Sport, has praised the South American.
He said on commentary: “I think you’re right with the word ‘outstanding’. That’s a brilliant save. It looks like it’s behind him and he won’t be able to recover, but somehow his agility has helped him.”
Martinez was a tad suspect for Saka’s opening goal for Arsenal, however.
The former Gunner got a hand to his former teammate’s volley, but replays indicate that Martinez was unsighted.
Unfortunately for Villa and Martinez, that proved to be the winning goal but honestly, you can’t attach much blame to the latter.
Truthfully, a lot of goalkeepers would’ve been beaten by the same effort – not because Saka’s effort was a thunderous one, but because it was shot from behind a sea of bodies and Martinez, ultimately, was helpless.
