Tottenham Hotspur were ‘hopeful’ of signing Antonio Rudiger on transfer deadline day earlier this week.
That is according to The Independent, who claimed that Spurs were optimistic of bringing the Chelsea defender across the capital to North London.
But nothing materialised and Goal actually reported that the player – who earns £100,000 per week with the Blues – snubbed a chance to join Tottenham toward the end of the window.
The 27-year-old is yet to kick a ball under Frank Lampard in the Premier League this season.
And his Germany manager, Joachim Low, has claimed that he can see the player trying to quit Chelsea again in January.
He said to Goal: “He tried everything to leave Chelsea because the European Championship is very important to him. I think he’ll try to leave again in the winter. He’s doing everything he can to stay in his best form.”
Even without the German centre-back, Tottenham could and probably will still have an excellent season.

That’s because they’re scoring goals for fun – 12 goals in four Premier League games – and that’s without the re-introduction of a certain Gareth Bale yet.
They might go back for Rudiger in the winter but, even if they don’t, Spurs will take some stopping.
