
Some Leeds United fans on social media have been reacting to Declan Rice’s performance for England on Tuesday evening.
Leeds and West Ham fans have been having something of an ongoing debate about their star midfielders, Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips.
However, over the summer it seemed as though the debate was settled as Phillips and Rice played together brilliantly at Euro 2020, helping England get to the final.
Unfortunately though, this time around, England were without Phillips as he was forced to pull out of the squad due to injury.
This meant that Rice had to anchor the midfield on his own as Gareth Southgate opted to go for a more attacking line-up with Mason Mount and Phil Foden playing alongside him.
Sadly, Rice didn’t put in his best performance on Tuesday – he wasn’t poor by any means, but it wasn’t the composed, and almost dominant, type of showing we’ve come to expect from the West Ham ace.
Leeds fans picked up on this and inevitably, they put his performance down to the fact that he didn’t have Phillips alongside him, and many called for Southgate to revert back to a system that utilises two holding midfielders.
