Darwin Nunez has admitted that he couldn’t believe when Alisson saved his effort against Liverpool on Wednesday night.
Liverpool moved into the semi-final of the Champions League with a 6-4 aggregate victory over Benfica at Anfield.
Minutes after Nunez made it 3-3 on the night, the Uruguay international came so close to firing the visitors to within one goal of progression.
However, the Brazilian goalkeeper, a £66 million signing in 2018, pulled off a stunning finger-tip save to deny the reported Jurgen Klopp target.
Here’s what Nunez said to Sky Italia after the game, referring to the save: “That Alisson save? That was incredible. I swear to you, I saw the ball going in.. and then it wasn’t.”
Real deal
Nunez certainly did enough over both legs to convince Liverpool that he’s the real deal.
Two goals against one of Europe’s best outfits – and almost three without Alisson’s heroics – is enough to suggest that he can cut it at a much higher level than Portuguese football.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed this week that the 22-year-old will definitely be leaving Benfica this summer.
Whether Liverpool are genuinely interested remains to be seen.
But if they were unsure before facing him in the Champions League, these two performances would’ve convinced them.
