Former Gunners hitman Kevin Campbell hasn’t ruled out Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta losing his job today.
Arsenal fans woke up this morning to the memory that their side have been eliminated from the Europa League.
Unai Emery came back to haunt the North Londoners by masterminding a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium last night to take the Spaniards into the final.
For the Emirates Stadium club, it was Europa League or bust by virtue of the fact that Arteta’s side are ninth in the Premier League table.
Winning Europe’s secondary competition was Arsenal’s last and only chance of salvaging something from what’s been a pretty horrendous campaign, all things considered.
And Campbell claims that the club’s hierarchy could well part company with the Spaniard as early as today.
He told Sky Sports News: “I swear, I could be here all day and still not cover all the problems at Arsenal. What part of this crossroads do they [the owners] start? If Mikel Arteta got sacked today, and it could happen, who do they recruit and will they back them? If they don’t sack Mikel Arteta, will they back him enough in the summer to change this football club?”
Will Arsenal sack Arteta today? Probably not but, then again, it’s only been 16 hours since they lost to Emery’s side.
After all, Emery was fired on the Friday after a defeat in the Europa League on a Thursday night so you really can’t rule it out.
During his post-match interview, Arteta looked and spoke like a defeated man.
Lord knows that he has spoken to the press after Arsenal defeats before, but this seemed particularly different and it’ll be interesting if it’s because he knows that he is on borrowed time.
