Speaking on his podcast, Leeds United journalist Phil Hay has cleared up what happened between Rodrigo and Fabian Schar during the game between Newcastle and Leeds this week.
The pair had a bit of a coming together during the game, and there seemed to be some words exchanged. However, after the game rumours began to swirl about Rodrigo spitting at the Swiss defender.
It has since come to light that this wasn’t the case, and Hay has now cleared up what actually happened.
“No he didn’t (spit),” Hay said.
The journalist then went on to compare the situation to another infamous incident involving Souleymane Doukara allegedly biting a Fulham player while he was at Leeds, before clearing up what actually happened:
“With Rodrigo it was strange, because at the press conference afterwards Bielsa was asked about it first and then Steve Bruce and both of them said they knew nothing about it.
“It was implied that Schar had said himself that he was spat at, and obviously he clarified afterwards that he hadn’t been.
“I spoke to people at Leeds who said ‘look Rodrigo isn’t hiding the fact that he said something offensive to him or he said something to rile him and that was where the reaction came from’, but no there was no spitting at all.”
It seems as though Rodrigo was the one who instigated the incident, but it was nothing too serious.
We see things like this on the football pitch on a weekly basis, and Rodrigo giving Schar a bit of lip is nothing to really think twice about.
This incident seems to have been a little bit overblown, and while Rodrigo was guilty of trying to get under Schar’s skin, it doesn’t seem to have been anything too serious.
