Ashley Williams told Sky Sports during their live coverage of Wales’ defeat to Belgium on Wednesday night that Tottenham forward Gareth Bale is in ‘good spirits’ after he spoke to him yesterday.

The former defender stated that he is ‘not sure’ about Bale’s time at Spurs with Jose Mourinho and seemingly aimed a jibe by claiming that the left-footed speedster is in a ‘happy place’ if the ‘atmosphere around him is good’.

A lot has been made about Bale’s time at Tottenham and how it has been a slow-burner from the Real Madrid man.

It didn’t help anyone’s cause when Bale shared that he plans to return to Spain next season and suggested that he used Spurs to build-up his fitness, as he told Sky Sports.

Nonetheless, former Everton defender Williams, who played alongside Bale’s for Wales, shared his thoughts on his former teammate.

“I spoke to him this morning (Wednesday),” said Williams. “He’s in good spirits. He’s happy when he is with Wales, as he always is.

“I have seen him come back from winning Champions Leagues and he comes into camp like it’s nothing to him. He’s just part of the squad. We have a lot of fun at camp and he’s a massive part of that and he’s always in the middle of the jokes.

“The stuff at Spurs hasn’t been all swimmingly good for him. But we all know what quality he has got.

“With Gareth, if he’s in a happy place and the atmosphere is good around him then you get the best out of him, which is why we always see the best when he plays for Wales.

“For him and his time at Spurs with Jose Mourinho, I am not sure. But what I can say is that when he’s enjoying his atmosphere then you get the best out of him.”

It started pretty well for Bale last night when Wales opened the scoring against Belgium last night thanks to his well-weighted through ball for Harry Wilson.

But that’s when the world’s best team kicked into gear and Bale wasn’t able to drag his team over the line in the World Cup qualifier.

Next up for Bale’s is a friendly against Mexico, where a certain Mourinho will be hoping he is rested, before taking on the Czech Republic in another qualifying match.
