Warren Barton has shared that he has ‘spent a bit of time with the Newcastle United owners’ and they have made it clear that their vision is to ‘build a team that’s going to sustain and compete for trophies for many years’, as he told the Highbury Squad.
The former Newcastle player added that the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Saudi-led ownership at St James’ Park are going to ‘keep on improving in what they are getting’ and added they will sign ‘international players for the future’.
Summer signing Sven Botman, who missed out on the Netherlands’ World Cup squad, was used as an example and how PIF might now target signing a player from France, Spain or Germany.
With the Magpies sitting in the Champions League places, ahead of where they probably planned to be, it’s going to be interesting to see how they negotiate the January market given what could come by the end of the season.
But whilst certain clubs like Manchester United have ‘just brought a name’ and, as a result, they find themselves in ‘chaos’, that won’t be happening up north.
“I spent a bit of time with the owners, they are going to build something,” said Barton. “It’s not just about a quick fix of doing it in 18 months. They are building. By building, they will probably go again this transfer window.
“Their vision is to build a club that’s going to sustain and compete for trophies for many years. They aren’t looking to buy maybe the top article now that’s finished, for a couple of years to go through. They are building for the future.
“When you look at what Manchester United have done in the last ten years, they have just brought a name. They haven’t really thought about a system. They are about branding. Selling shirts. And that’s why they are in chaos.
“They will keep on improving in what they are getting. They have got international players. They had Botman who was in the Dutch squad. Maybe get a French player that was in the French squad, someone who is in Spain and Germany. They are going to get international players for the future.”
