Paul Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (20/02/21 at 12:10 pm) that Leeds ‘don’t play to the scoreboard’ unlike other teams as he gave Sheffield United as an example.

The TV pundit claimed that even if Leeds are 4-1 down, like they were at one point at the Emirates last week, their highly-demanding coach still genuinely believes they can get something from the match.

Leeds were 4-0 down to the Gunners last week, but two quick-fire goals got those in Yorkshire believing that the comeback was on – and it could have been a lot different had Patrick Bamford been awarded a penalty at 4-2.

Given Leeds’ mindset and never-say-die attitude, Merson shared that’s why he was ‘disappointed’ with their performance and defeat against Wolves on Friday.

“I believe he does think that (they can still get something from the game even when 4-1/4-2 down v Arsenal),” said Merson. “They don’t play to the scoreboard, they just keep on going.

“I see other teams play. I see Sheffield United last week (v West Ham) for the first time put their heads down and the last goal was poor.

“I watch Leeds, even they go 4-0 down and it goes 4-1, I sit there and think ‘they have a chance here Leeds’. It’s just the way they play. If they score here and it’s game on.

“That’s why I love watching them and I was disappointed (against Wolves). I love watching them and I can understand what the manager is doing. I don’t know when the game is safe with Leeds.”

From minute one of Leeds making a return to the big time, many from the outside expected fireworks and boy have those at Elland Road provided that.

After 24 Premier League games, Leeds have scored 40 goals and conceded 43 the other way, which just sums them up as a team.

Supporters across the land always look for an identity to their team, some ambition and progression, and it’s fair to say that Bielsa is providing that in bucket loads for his side.
