After Amanda Staveley and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) took over at Newcastle, all eyes were on the January transfer window.
The Telegraph even claimed that Newcastle had £190m to spend this winter, after Mike Ashley was shoved through the exit door at St James’ Park.
One name who PIF could spend a fraction of their £320bn on is Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti, who is said to be a target for the Magpies.
What’s the story?
Well, the Sun even believe a bid for the 31-cap France international and World Cup winner is currently being prepared by Newcastle.
Umtiti has barely played this season, making just one appearance in La Liga when appearing as a 96th minute substitute.
The arrival of Xavi has done little to change the 28-year-old’s situation, and it now seems very likely that he’ll be leaving the Camp Nou.
Lionel Messi rates Newcastle target Samuel Umtiti
One man who shared some very kind words about Umtiti is none other than Lionel Messi.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner once described the centre-back as an “excellent” person who gives 100% out on the pitch.
Speaking to World Soccer, Messi said: “[Umtiti] trains in the same way he plays. He doesn’t leave anything in reserve; he’s an excellent person away from the pitch as well.
“Seeing how he trains, I’m not surprised at what he does in matches, I see all his qualities.”
If Messi thinks highly of you, then that speaks volumes.

In our view, Umtiti would be an excellent signing, although Howe should be wary of the £21.2m man’s injury issues.
Last season, the former Lyon man missed 25 games due to injury problems – Newcastle can’t afford to spend money on players who won’t be available in their fight against relegation.
Keep an eye on this saga, as Umtiti looks likely to leave Barcelona.
