Steve Bruce has told BBC Radio Newcastle that Dwight Gayle has worked ‘extremely hard’ in an attempt to return to full fitness.

Gayle has not played for Newcastle this season as he has been struggling with a troublesome injury.

However, Bruce feels that the striker could now be back sooner rather than later, as he has really been putting in work to recover.

“I’ve seen him running out on the grass,” Bruce said.

“He’s worked extremely hard to be there or thereabouts. We hope in the next two, three, four weeks, to have Dwight back will give us something else, because he was playing very well before he got injured, unfortunately.”

Gayle’s return to fitness will be a boost to Newcastle, as he became their main striker towards the back end of last season.

Gayle was in good form after lockdown, as he proved his ability to score goals at the top level.

The 30-year-old may find it much harder to earn game time at Newcastle this term, though.

Callum Wilson has now arrived at the Magpies and his impressive start at St. James’ Park has quickly seen him become the club’s main man up-front.
