Paul Merson thinks Chelsea and Newcastle United transfer target, Anthony Gordon, will now ‘stay’ at Everton beyond the next transfer window, as he told Sportskeeda.

The Sky pundit added that he ‘refuses to believe’ Everton rejected offers for the player during the 2022 summer transfer window, only to sell him in January.

The 21-year-old was most wanted by Chelsea, who under the now-sacked Thomas Tuchel’s stewardship, were willing to put some serious dough on the table for the player.

Even though they aren’t in Europe, Newcastle United were also sticking their chests out and expressing an interest in the rising star.

But, despite all that noise, Gordon stayed put on Merseyside and he is now a key part of Frank Lampard’s side moving forward.

If Gordon continues to shine at Goodison Park, it will only raise his stock further, but when the transfer window re-opens, Merson explained why the Everton fans have nothing to worry about.

“Anthony Gordon was wanted by Chelsea this summer, but that was under Thomas Tuchel and Everton rejected massive amounts of money from the Blues to keep him at the club,” said Merson.

“I think he’ll stay at the club this season – I refuse to believe they kept him this summer only to sell him midway through the season!”

GORDON MADE THE RIGHT CALL TO STAY

The lights of the Champions League, possibly challenging at the top of the table and playing alongside much better players.

It would have been pretty easy for Gordon to get distracted and want that possible transfer to Chelsea given what they were offering.

But the boyhood Toffee put his head down and grafted for his side, including having two goals already to his name this season.

This is Gordon’s first proper full season when he can go at it, and if he wants England recognition, then he needs to be up those numbers, including aiming for double figures.
