You can say whatever you like about Arsené Wenger, but the Arsenal legend understood football.
The Frenchman was responsible for finding gems such as Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry, whereas his footballing philosophy was a beautiful one.
Aside from having an eye for a player, Wenger also proved he had a sixth sense for potential coaches back in October 2015.
What’s the story?
Well, when speaking in a press conference over six years ago now, Wenger revealed that he wanted Mikel Arteta to go into coaching.
As quoted by Arsenal’s official website, the 72-year-old said: “I really hope Mikel considers going into coaching. When you manage, you want to see your players continue and see them give their experience and knowledge back.
“You want them to give their expertise of the way we want to play football and the way we want to behave. It would be great if someone like Mikel went into management, so somewhere the spirit of our game can survive through the players who have played for us.”
Interestingly, Wenger didn’t specifically say he wanted Arteta to manage Arsenal, although he did suggest that was the case when saying he wants the “spirit of our game” to continue through the “players who have played for us“.
Now, the Spaniard has granted Wenger’s wishes, and he’s proving his former boss right as the Gunners are starting to impress.
As things stand, Arsenal have a great chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
The north Londoners currently find themselves sixth in the Premier League, although they have three games in hand over Manchester United in fourth, who are just four points ahead.
Mikel Arteta can be Arsené Wenger 2.0
Wenger left a legacy at Arsenal which probably won’t be topped by anyone, although in terms of his football philosophy, Arteta can emulate that style.
We’re already seeing the Gunners play some exciting football this season, which involves quick passing, rapid transitions up the pitch and bravery to build from the back.
It’s a long way off the Frenchman’s iconic ‘Wengerball’ – however, in time, we’re sure that Arteta’s tactical approach will soon mirror Wenger’s.
