Jose Enrique has stated on Instagram that he ‘really doubts’ the rumours that Liverpool want to sign Jack Butland before Friday’s deadline.

The Mirror have claimed that Liverpool are lining up a move for Stoke City’s shot-stopper following Adrian’s blunder during his side’s 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa last time out.

It is said that Butland, who has lost the number one gloves to Adam Davies this season, is ‘desperate’ to leave the Potteries.

But former Liverpool left-back, Enrique has played down the club bringing in a new keeper, as he posted this message on Liverpoolgoals Instagram page: “I really doubt they sign another goalkeeper right now, but we will see.”

Whilst there are clear problems with Adrian deputising for the injured Alisson because of the mistakes he has in his locker, it would be an even bigger risk bringing Butland to the club.

During his days in the Premier League, he was an England international, but ever since Stoke dropped down to the second-tier, his form hit a wall he is struggling to remove from his path.

On his day, Butland wouldn’t be a number two in the Premier League, but a number one. However, he now finds himself as a back-up in the Championship, which proves how far he has fallen.

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

It’s not a case of Butland lacking quality or the technique to keep a clean sheet, but his confidence has well and truly been shot.

That has been showcased in his game where he has made calamitous mistake after calamitous mistake.

Whilst Adrian has a problem playing out from the back, Butland’s handling and decision-making has ruined a player that was pushing for England’s number one jersey a few years ago.

Therefore, it would be a surprise if the Reds push for an error-prone benched Championship keeper for Adrian.
