Sean Dyche has been speaking about Harry Kane on The Ben Foster Podcast, where he made a stunning revelation about the Tottenham talisman.

Burnley almost signed Harry Kane

Well, the 51-year-old revealed that Tim Sherwood told him he could sign the England international for just £7m back in the 2013/14 campaign.

Dyche said: “I phoned up about him. Tim Sherwood immediately said £7m. We (Burnley) were in the market for £3m. I went to the board and they said we can’t do that.”

Now, just imagine how different things might be had Burnley found an extra £4m from somewhere.

This was before Kane had truly exploded at Tottenham.

In the 2013/14 season, the striker was still playing Premier League 2 football for Spurs, and had only been given his full Premier League debut in April of that campaign.

The north Londoners also had Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado in their attacking ranks at this point, so Sherwood was clearly happy to move Kane on had he received a sum of £7m.

It goes without saying that Tottenham fans all over the globe will be delighted that Burnley were struggling for cash at that particular stage.

Kane is now worth arguably more than £200m to Spurs, earns £200,000-a-week in north London, and is also close to becoming England’s all-time top scorer with 50 goals in 73 appearances.

The 29-year-old is also Tottenham’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League with 189 goals.

Tottenham really could have lost Harry Kane

It wasn’t just Dyche who almost lured Kane away from N17.

Neil Warnock has also revealed that he enquired about the striker when at Crystal Palace, although – as the Evening Standard recall – Mauricio Pochettino admitted he needed him for Europa League action.

In our view, had the south Londoners made more of an effort at that stage, Tottenham may have been happy to part with Kane for a decent fee given his status as a fringe player.

There are fine margins in football, and it is certainly interesting to think about how differently Kane’s life may be nowadays, had Burnley found a way to meet the £7m asking price.
