Michael Owen has claimed that Liverpool now have a better squad than their Premier League title rivals, Manchester City.

The former striker admitted he ‘never used to say that’, but he thinks Liverpool now have ‘more strength in depth’, as he told Premier League Productions (24/04/22 at 1:20 pm).

A couple of seasons ago, the Reds didn’t have Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz, Konstantinos Tsimikas or Diogo Jota on their books.

Whilst the likes of Naby Keita were still struggling to make a name for themselves on Merseyside.

But, all of that has now changed, with the above players, added with Kieta’s improvement, drastically changing the depth in quality this Liverpool side now has.

As a result of it all, Owen has changed his mind about who is better equipped in the quality department between Liverpool and Man City.

“I have been critical and it’s just the way they have been, but they have had 14, 15 or 16 top players,” said Owen.

“Then they have had four or five behind that weaken the side. Now I think they have much more strength in depth now. Much more.

“I think their squad is as good as Manchester City’s and I never used to say that. I always that Liverpool’s first XI was probably better than Man City’s.

“But Man City had strength in depth and they could rotate. I don’t anymore.”

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have locked horns on three occasions this season – two draws in the Premier League and an FA Cup semi-final win for the Liverpool boss.

But could a fourth and final meeting of this pulsating campaign be on the cards for the two legendary managers?

Manchester City will host European giants Real Madrid in the first leg of the semi-final of the Champions League tonight, with Guardiola hoping his team can secure another passage to the final.

If they do, then there is a great possibility that Klopp could be waiting for him in the final because Liverpool are the favourites to see off Unai Emery’s Villarreal in the other semi-final.
