Andy Cole and Perry Groves warned Liverpool on talkSPORT that they should stay away from potentially signing Shkodran Mustafi.

The Telegraph have reported that Liverpool are interested in bringing the back-up Arsenal man to Anfield.

Whilst rumours intensify [Read Here] about Ben Davies joining Liverpool from Preston, it does seem as though those on Merseyside are looking at another centre-back.

Marseille central defender Duje Caleta-Car is another name being touted, but it’s unlikely that a deal will be done for the Ligue 1 star.

Either way, it does seem as though Liverpool are now keen to bulk up their centre-back options.

If they do opt for Mustafi’s signature then ex-Manchester United striker Cole and Highbury legend Groves have a word of warning for them.

“No, I must admit, I wouldn’t be taking Mustafi because I have seen him play for Arsenal,” said Groves. “He has always got a mistake in him.

“And he loses a little bit of concentration – Surely, Liverpool are at the stage where when you bring someone in they have to be as good or if not better than what you have. I don’t think he is.”

Cole then added: “I am going to put my Manchester United hat on now and say yes.

“[But] taking it off, no. Not where Liverpool are looking to get to. Not even for six months. But putting my hat back on then 100%.”

At the start of the transfer window, it seemed as though Liverpool weren’t going to add a fresh face to their backline.

But it seems as though Joel Matip’s constant visits to the treatment room has resulted in the Premier League champions finally pushing that button.

One thing now looks very likely in that a centre-back should arrive, but whether two walk through the Anfield gates remains to be seen.
