Speaking on The Overlap, Gary Neville has shot down the suggestion that Mauricio Pochettino will be the next Aston Villa manager.
Steven Gerrard has come under fire over the past few weeks after his Aston Villa side got off to a poor start to the season, and a certain section of Villa fans have been calling for Pochettino to join the Midlands club as his replacement.
Neville was discussing these links, and the pundit believes that Pochettino wouldn’t take the Villa job due to the fact his last two jobs have been at Champions League level.
What’s been said?
Neville wrote off the idea of Pochettino going to Villa Park.
“Pochettino would only go to a top six club, he wouldn’t go lower than that would he?” Neville asked.
“I think he would for the right project,” David Ornstein replied.
“Mauricio Pochettino is not going to go to Aston Villa, I love Aston Villa as a club, but Mauricio Pochettino having had Tottenham having had PSG, his aspirations will be higher than Aston Villa.”
Unlikely
As interesting as it would be to see Pochettino manage this group of players at Aston Villa, it has to be said that this move is unlikely.
Let’s be honest, Pochettino could probably walk into most top jobs whenever inevitable sackings occur, and while Villa are a fantastic and ambitious club, they’ve not played European football for a long time.
Stranger things have happened in football, but with Pochettino’s stock being so high, it’s hard to imagine that he’d go to Aston Villa after working with clubs such as PSG and Tottenham.
Villa may need to be a bit more realistic if they are in the market for a Gerrard replacement anytime soon.
