Rio Ferdinand thinks Liverpool transfer target Enzo Fernandez could be headed for the exit door after his performances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The former Manchester United defender added ‘I like this guy’ after he picked up the Young Player of the Tournament when Argentina beat France in a thrilling World Cup final on Sunday.

Whilst the Benfica midfielder didn’t start the tournament, he was brought into the fold by Lionel Scaloni after their shocking opening defeat to Saudi Arabia.

He announced himself by scoring a stunning goal during a must-win game against Mexico during the group stages and he hasn’t looked back since.

On Sunday, he started for his nation as they stopped France from winning back-to-back world titles after a heart-stopping shootout victory.

Many of those Argentina players will now find that their reputations will go through the roof, no more so than Fernandez, who Ferdinand thinks could now be on the move, as he told Match of the Day.

“Enzo Fernandez, I like this guy,” said Ferdinand. “21-years-old – he’s done nothing but enhance his reputation. There will be clubs sniffing around him. Top, top clubs.

“He was so composed, for a kid so young at this level. Tactically very good as well.”

LIVERPOOL’S MIDFIELD ISSUES

As domestic football returns, it’s perhaps football’s worst-kept secret that Jurgen Klopp has big, big issues in his midfield.

From players’ form going out of the window to injured stars spending more time in the treatment room than out on the pitch, Liverpool’s midfield needs sorting and refreshing.

That’s why someone like Fernandez has been linked with a possible move to the Merseyside giants and his all-action and non-stop energy style would suit what Klopp needs.
