Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Neil Warnock has been discussing modern management and dealing with chairmen.
Warnock has seen it all during his managerial career, and he believes that the toughest challenge for a manager these days is managing your relationship with the board as much as it is managing your players.
Warnock is of the opinion that young managers don’t realise this, stating that he often laughs at the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard who are going into this profession blind.

Warnock laughs at Lampard and Gerrard
Warnock gave his view of modern management.
“I think that’s why we had the best time. Dealing with upstairs is now more difficult than that dressing room and unless you’ve been there you don’t know. That’s why I laugh at the Frank Lampards and the Gerrards. I think ‘wait until you see what’s happening’. They’ve never witnessed that part, they only deal with great players at that level,” Warnock said.
He’s learned
Perhaps Steven Gerrard still needs a proper education in this sphere, but Frank Lampard has already had his fair share of ownership issues.
Take a look at the three owners Lampard has worked under thus far.
Mel Morris at Derby County almost caused the club to go bust.
Roman Abramovich at Chelsea was historically one of the most trigger-happy owners in English football history, while Farhad Moshiri has mismanaged Everton’s finances for quite some time now as well.
Simply put, Lampard hasn’t had much luck with his owners over the years, and while it may have been a rude awakening to begin with, he must now understand the pressures of dealing with demanding, and sometimes inept, chairmen.
