Jeff Stelling has questioned why Liverpool didn’t push for Jude Bellingham at the start of the summer transfer window, if the rumours are true that the midfielder is their ‘number one’ transfer target.
Former striker Clinton Morrison shared how Jurgen Klopp’s side are interested in the Borussia Dortmund superstar and if they manage to secure his transfer this summer, then it ‘wouldn’t be a stop-gap’ signing, as he told Sky Sports News.
Liverpool failed to win their opening three Premier League games and the concerns in midfield just grew and grew, including Thiago Alcantara getting injured.
Well, it has now resulted in Klopp admitting that they need to dive into the summer market, which slams shut on Thursday, and bring in that much-needed midfielder.
Who can Liverpool sign before the deadline? Is it too much to ask to try and land Bellingham’s signature? It seems as though the player won’t be available and the Reds are just waiting in the wings until he does.
Sky presenter Stelling discussed Liverpool’s midfield issues, as Morrison put forward Bellingham’s name ahead of the deadline.
“Initially Jurgen Klopp said ‘we don’t want to bring anyone else in, not in midfield, we have nine midfield players’,” said Stelling.
“But now they are talking about bringing a midfield player in. Isn’t anybody who comes in now going to be a stop-gap as far as they are concerned?”
Morrison responded: “It depends. If they get the boy Jude Bellingham, who I know they are interested in. Dortmund might not want to do business. But that’s not a stop-gap. He is their number one target.”
Stelling then responded: “Why weren’t they trying to do that at the start of the transfer window?”
Morrisson added: “They were trying to do it at the start of the window. But because Dortmund already lost Haaland, then they weren’t going to let Jude Bellingham to Liverpool as well.”
POOR START BLESSING IN DISGUISE
It would have been interesting if Liverpool had won their opening three matches whether or not they would have expressed intent in going for another midfielder this summer.
Now, that player hasn’t arrived yet and there isn’t much time, but with fans crying for another option in the middle of the park, their poor start has now resulted in the club having to go down the road.
It will be interesting if this, in the long run, is a blessing in disguise because it wouldn’t be a surprise if that’s the case.
Luis Diaz was supposed to move to Merseyside this summer, only for Tottenham to knock for his services in January, and his arrival in the winter helped the club land two domestic trophies, as well as take the Premier League title and the Champions League to the wire last season.
