Cavani is out of contract at PSG this summer, and no new deal is in place, and the striker has been linked with a move to Newcastle on a free transfer.
Foot Mercato, La Gazzetta dello Sport and L’Equipe all have reported interest of the Magpies in the Uruguay international striker.
However, former Manchester United midfielder Herrera has said that the 33-year-old wants to play in Spain.
Herrera told AS, as translated by Goal.com: “I know Cavani wants to play in Spain.
“He loves the league and the country, he asks me about it a lot. However, since we left Paris I’ve not spoken to him about his situation.”
Move to Atletico Madrid?
FCInterNews have also reported that Newcastle want Cavani, claiming that the Magpies are the only club interested in the striker in recent months.
However, the news outlet has claimed that the former Napoli star signed a pre-contract with Atletico Madrid worth €10 million (£8.89 million) per season for two years.
It has been noted that the pre-contract was signed before football in Europe was suspended due to the current health crisis in the world, and is waiting to be registered.
Hope for Newcastle United?
Since nothing has been finalised yet, there is still a chance that Newcastle could sign Cavani.
After all, things could have changed for the striker and Atletico now financially.
