Tyrone Mings told Match of the Day Live on BBC One that he ‘cannot even remember’ England’s goal against Croatia but he does know that Leeds United Kalvin Phillips ‘put in a lot of work’ during the game.

The Aston Villa defender put in a strong performance for the Three Lions on Sunday, but he couldn’t better the Leeds man who was Man of the Match.

Both players were under pressure going into England’s Euro 2020 opener, but they ended the game with high plaudits from all parts of the country for their performance.

Nonetheless, this is what Mings had to say about England’s goal and Phillips performance against Croatia yesterday despite not remembering much.

“I cannot even remember it, to be honest,” said Mings. “I know Kalvin put in a lot of work and then Raz has got the quality and composure in front of goal.

“He has shown that many, many times before to finish. And from there, we wanted a second.

“But as a defender, and as a team, that wants to be hard to beat, we were resilient and we kept a clean sheet.”

This was a big performance from Mings and a much-needed one because of the pressure on his shoulders going into the game.

Many questioned his selection, but he answered those critics in a pretty strong fashion yesterday, but the pressure will only grow from here on in.

As for Phillips, he wasn’t expected to start against Croatia, but following his performance at Wembley, he surely cannot be dropped now even though more attack-minded players will be needed against Scotland on Friday.
