Alex Crook has claimed on talkSPORT Breakfast (26/01/23) that it’s most likely Arsenal or Chelsea sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana during the January transfer window than Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.

Usually, it’s strikers or forward players that are at talk of the transfer town, with near-on every club always looking, wanting or needing one.

Well, it seems as though midfielders are very much needed now, especially in London, with Arsenal and Chelsea looking to bring in new faces to enhance their quality in the middle of the park.

For Mikel Arteta’s side, it’s a case of adding much-needed depth for a team pushing for the Premier League title and hoping to stop the possible surge that could come their way from Manchester City.

As for Chelsea, they are in a world of mess, despite spending nearly half a billion under new owner Todd Boehly. They are at risk of missing out on Champions League football at the end of the season.

To no one’s surprise, both Arsenal and Chelsea are interested in some of the same faces, including two midfield engines in £50 million target Onana and Ecuador star, Caicedo, as transfer expert Alex Crook shared a lowdown on both players.

“Possibly, there is interest in Onana, a £50 million asking price,” said Crook. “I think it might be a bit rich for a January signing.

“I know Arsenal have looked at him. Chelsea are keen to strengthen in the centre of midfield. I think they are most likely able to prize Onana away than they are Caicedo. Brighton are digging in their heels. They don’t want to really lose anybody in this window.

“They want to keep the squad together. They are in a European challenge, no question about that.”

ARSENAL AND CHELSEA IN THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW

If both sets of fans had to pick, then they probably would pick signing Caicedo over Onana given his performances for overachieving Brighton this season.

After the Mykhailo Mudryk saga, it would be something if Arsenal now beat their neighbours to the signature of the Ecuador international.

It probably wouldn’t reach the levels of Mudryk because the player himself couldn’t stop expressing to the world that he wanted to move to north London, only to secure a transfer to Stamford Bridge.

But if Arsenal can get a midfielder this month, then it will ease the fears of what might happen if Thomas Partey were to get injured.
