Alasdair Gold has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur were trying to bring in a central defender last month, but were simply unable to, on his personal Youtube channel.

Jose Mourinho consistently played down the chances of Tottenham bringing in new signings last month, and the club ultimately had a very quiet window.

But Gold says that Spurs did actually go into the month with hopes of bringing in a central defender.

“I know that Spurs would have liked to have brought in a centre-back if possible,” he said.

“But it was so dependent on so many other things happening, with various other people going, and that obviously didn’t happen.”

Mourinho’s apparent desire to bring in a central defender in January is interesting, but arguably not a surprise given the way the season has gone.

Tottenham pushed hard for a centre-back in the summer, and ended up signing Joe Rodon from Swansea City.

Rodon has done well enough in his initial few months at Tottenham, but Mourinho has already hinted that he sees the Welshman as a long-term project, rather than a player who is the finished article already.

And, given Spurs’s defensive frailties of late, their failure to land a really solid defender in the past few weeks could prove costly as the season progresses.
