Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Sam Allardyce has been discussing Trent Alexander-Arnold and a potential position change for the full-back.

Alexander-Arnold has come in for a lot of criticism this season due to his defensive deficiencies, and according to Allardyce, those problems could be masked by a move into midfield.

The ex-Bolton manager says that the England star could be great as a midfielder.

Alexander-Arnold position change mooted

Allardyce discussed the idea of playing the 24-year-old further up.

“Jurgen has played him in the midfield a few times before now, and I just wonder whether he can actually go there and be great. It wouldn’t bring up that defending side as much. He has the touch, and I know it’s harder in there rather than full-back, but he is such a talent and unfortunately, he’s had a lot of stick and I think it’s knocked his confidence,” Allardyce said.

Worth a try

This isn’t the first time this idea has been discussed, but in the past, Jurgen Klopp has batted away these suggestions with an ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ kind of attitude.

However, now, things certainly are broken at Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold isn’t doing his job properly at right-back, and the midfield is being completely bypassed in almost every single game.

The Reds need to try something different, and moving Alexander-Arnold to the midfield may be the answer to their prayers.

Think about it. He has all the attributes needed to play in that position, and, in all honesty, he can’t be much worse than some of the players we’ve seen occupying those positions in recent weeks.

Klopp may want to take Allardyce’s advice and try this experiment.
