The Telegraph reported last week that West Ham United had tabled a £27 million bid for Burnley’s James Tarkowski. The Englishman was one of the best defenders in the Premier League last season and he is looking for a big move.
The Hammers are looking to strengthen their squad after a terrible campaign in the league last season. West Ham finished 16th but they could have easily gone down.
Michail Antonio’s outstanding form after the break helped West Ham stay up. But a lack of new signings could well cost them in the upcoming season.
Tarkowski would be a fantastic addition to David Moyes’ side. The Englishman spoke to the Telegraph about his future, hinting that he is open to a move this summer, but only to a Champions League club.
He said: “For me, with the age I am coming into my prime years and wanting to progress, I want to go for the top level. I want to play at the best level I can, club football and internationally. I want to test myself against the best. We will see what happens.
“I just want to play at the top level and if that opportunity came I don’t think it is something I could turn down. Champions League and playing for your country, playing in big tournaments, is playing at the top level, so that’s what I would want to do if the opportunities came.”
West Ham finished 15 points and six places below Tarkowski’s Burnley last season. Leaving the Clarets for the London Stadium would be a strange move, especially when the defender is enjoying his best spell as a professional.
The Hammers are nowhere near the top half of the league table, let alone the Champions League. Their chances of signing Tarkowski, based on his own comments, seem incredibly slim at the moment.
However, stranger things have happened in football and, if West Ham can somehow pull off this deal, their chances of having a good season in the Premier League will increase considerably.
