Gabriel Agbonlahor has taken a swipe at Leeds United supporters for their actions against Arsenal at Elland Road on Saturday evening.
Leeds got hammered 4-1 by Mikel Arteta’s outfit West Yorkshire.
But toward the end of the game, the home supporters began applauding their players’ efforts in spite of the scoreline.
Marcelo Bielsa had a freak injury list to contend with and was only able to include nine senior players in the squad, with the rest comprised of Thorp Arch youngsters.
Under the circumstances, only a heavy defeat was on the agenda for the Whites and their supporters appreciated the players’ industry nonetheless.
But Agbonlahor claims that he doesn’t understand why Leeds fans – who watched a 7-0 defeat at Manchester City last week – are happy to be getting ‘battered’.
He told talkSPORT: “I just don’t understand it. The atmosphere at the ground, you’re cheering! You’re getting battered every week. It’s Sunday League scores. Eleven goals in two games. This isn’t how you play in the Premier League.”
It’s difficult to know when Agbonlahor is intentionally trying to be inflammatory with regards to Leeds fans.
Let’s face it, the two don’t have a strong relationship and probably never will.
But on this occasion, it does sound like he’s trolling them.
The reason why the United supporters weren’t foaming at the mouth in anger against Arsenal was the context.
As mentioned, Bielsa had to name a 15-year-old in the squad – Archie Gray – because there was literally nobody else.
Leeds fans know about the problems Bielsa faced in somehow assembling a squad and their applause mirrored that.
