Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he’s advised Liverpool to extend James Milner’s contract at Anfield.
The 36-year-old midfielder is out of contract on Merseyside this summer.
Despite getting older, Milner, who joined Liverpool in 2015 on a free transfer, is still an important player for the German manager and has started 10 games across all competitions this season – including seven in the Premier League.
It goes without saying that he isn’t as vital for the Reds as he once was, but Klopp remains a massive admirer.
And the Liverpool manager claims Milner has personally told him that he wants to keep playing football, adding that he would like Fenway Sports Group to extend his existing terms.
He told The Mirror: “By talks I mean I indicated my wish that James stays with us beyond this season, in a playing capacity. James will keep playing, he has told me this. So he should, by the way.”
Should Liverpool keep him?
Some Liverpool supporters might disagree but who can second guess Klopp on matters like these?
The former Borussia Dortmund coach watches him in training every single day and if Klopp feels that Milner can still be an asset for the Reds then, honestly, that has to be accepted.
Obviously FSG have other contracts to extend and those certainly take priority, like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane for instance.
But with Milner being a brilliant utility player and as fit as anybody at the club, keeping him another year seems like an absolute no-brainer.
