We all knew Manchester City would spend big after missing out on the Premier League and the Champions League last season.

However, nobody expected them to have the best player in the world in their sights. Lionel Messi, as unlikely as it seems, could leave Barcelona and join Pep Guardiola at the Etihad in the very near future.

The legendary Argentinian wants to leave Barcelona for free this summer. The Catalans will do everything they can to stop that from happening but, if latest reports are to be believed, Messi is determined to leave the Camp Nou this summer (Goal).

There are only a handful of clubs who can afford to sign Messi. Manchester City are probably the likeliest at this point thanks to Guardiola’s relationship with the Barcelona superstar.

That would be a real problem for Liverpool, who are gearing up to defend their Premier League title. Going toe-to-toe with City is hard enough but, when you add arguably the greatest player in the history of the game into the mix, it becomes much more difficult.

Liverpool fans will be hoping that Messi snubs Guardiola and stays with Barcelona. Facing him twice next season is a battle they would rather not have and Reds star Andy Robertson thinks the same.

He was quoted by TalkSport saying: “From a completely selfish point of view, I hope it doesn’t happen. I hope he stays at Barca but look he is one of, if not the best player to ever play the game. So for him to go to one of your nearest rivals is probably never a good sign.

“He is a fantastic player, I have no doubt if he came to the Premier League he would bring the exact same quality and same passion and everything he brings at Barca. I think Liverpool have ruled out that we are going to sign him so I don’t want him anywhere near the Premier League but we’ll wait and see what happens with that.”

Messi would instantly become the most feared player in the Premier League if he joins City. Multiple defenders will share the same view as Robertson but, club allegiances aside, it would be a real treat to see the best ever in England.
