Kyle Walker has told England’s press conference on Wednesday – as per the Guardian’s YouTube – that he hopes his old Tottenham teammate Hugo Lloris really struggles on Saturday against England as The Three Lions take on France.
Both nations impressed in the last 16. France cruised past Poland to win 3-1, with Kylian Mbappe shining – scoring a brace and taking his tally to five goals for the World Cup. An incredible feat, given he has only started three times.
Meanwhile, Lloris was impressive in goal. While Poland did score, Lloris made some excellent saves. He was a bit dodgy with his feet at times but his ability to stop shots going past him has never been doubted. Spurs fans will back that up.
Walker, of course, played alongside Lloris at Spurs for five years, before Walker went to Manchester City in 2017. Asked about his old Spurs teammate, Walker was full of praise for the £100k-a-week man – but hopes he has a bad game.
“As for Hugo, he was my captain at Tottenham,” Walker said, when asked about Lloris. “I remember when he signed and there was Brad Friedel in net, he came from Lyon. He’s always been a great professional and a great captain.
“Nothing but good words to say for Hugo but if he’s watching, I hope you don’t have the best of games on Saturday because I want to take my nation through,” the Manchester City defender continued during Wednesday’s presser.
Walker hopes old Tottenham teammate Lloris struggles on Saturday
Lloris has enjoyed a decent tournament. His save against Poland, with the scoreline still 0-0, was crucial. But Lloris does have his weaknesses and it was on full show against Poland, with his passing under pressure somewhat questionable.
The left-footed veteran is not good with the ball at his feet and Harry Kane will know that. The Spurs striker will know what Lloris can and cannot do. While all the focus is on Kylian Mbappe against Walker, challenging Lloris could help.
