Norwich City’s new manager Dean Smith has stated that he hopes Steven Gerrard can be ‘very successful’ at Aston Villa, as he told his press conference.
On Wednesday, Norwich unveiled Smith as their new boss and the boyhood Villa fan made it clear that he wants his former club to do well under their new coach, but not at his side’s expense.
The managerial world in football is crazy and Smith’s recent sacking just proves that point.
His last game in charge of Villa was against Southampton – and now his first game in charge of Norwich will be against the Saints.
All of that only weeks apart, a rarity in the game and a first in the Premier League.
Nonetheless, it’s Gerrard who is now in the Villa Park dugout and Smith shared his thoughts on the man who has replaced him.
On what type of job Gerrard can do: “I have no idea,” said Smith. “They decided to go with Steven and obviously he has been very successful at Rangers.
“I hope he is very successful at Aston Villa, but obviously not at Norwich City’s expense now.”
In the summer, when Smith was in the Villa dugout, he brought Norwich City’s main man, Emiliano Buendia to the club from Norwich.
Little did he know that he will be standing in the Carrow Road dugout now hoping that he didn’t make such a call.
But that’s the crazy world of football as he faces the impossible task of trying to keep Norwich up.
There is still a lot to play for and come next month Smith will be facing off against the very same club that sacked him.
It will be interesting to see how he sets up against a crop of players he brought to the Midlands giants.
