Antonio Conte has issued a worrying update on Tottenham star Matt Doherty, who picked up an injury in this weekend’s 4-0 win against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Speaking to the press via Football London, the Italian manager revealed that the Republic of Ireland international will be looked at by doctors this Sunday after Doherty came off early with a suspected knee injury.

The former Wolves star has been in sensational form for Tottenham in recent weeks, with Doherty playing arguably his best football yet for the club since moving to north London in 2020 for a reported £15m.

In the right-wingback position, the role that made Doherty so efficient at Wolves, Conte has transformed the 30-year-old’s fortunes at Tottenham, however, the Spurs coach had a concerning injury update on the defender after their massive win against Villa.

Conte said: “I hope nothing serious. The doctors are going to check on him tomorrow. I hope nothing serious because he wanted to continue to play and then he later wanted to come out. I hope nothing serious because he’s now an important player for us.”

Lengthy injury for Doherty could be season-defining for Tottenham

With Tottenham now in the driver seat for top-four, losing Doherty now to injury after finally finding some rhythm would be a killer blow for Conte’s side and a potential season changer if things begin to unravel from here.

Indeed, whilst Spurs managed to deal with Doherty’s injury in fine fashion this weekend, there’s no telling what could happen in the next few games if the Irishman is out on the treatment table for a number of weeks.
