Ian Wright has showered praise on Newcastle United hitman Callum Wilson.

The 30-year-old has had a bit-part role in Qatar so far as England comfortably progressed from their World Cup group.

Wilson has only managed some 45 minutes across two group outings – a 6-2 win over Iran and a 3-0 victory against Wales – but he still could’ve got his name on the scoresheet on a couple of occasions, particularly in the first game but he chose to square it to a teammate instead.

And the Newcastle striker has earned plenty of praise from Wright as a result of his unselfish play, with the former Arsenal marksman ‘hoping and praying’ that he gets the goals he deserves for the remainder of the competition.

He told Wrighty’s House podcast: “I saw him the other day and told him I admire his unselfishness. He comes on in the World Cup, team is 5-1 up. You’re running through. You can score yourself but you square it and give it to Jack Grealish. Callum actually said to me ‘Give and you shall receive’. I hope and pray that his time is coming.”

He probably won’t start an England game in the World Cup.

Gareth Southgate’s side have a round-of-16 encounter against Senegal on Sunday and although Harry Kane is almost certainly going to spearhead the attack, what an option off the bench Wilson is.

The 30-year-old has netted six Premier League goals in 10 starts for Newcastle this season.

Since Eddie Howe has taken the reins in the North East over the past 13 months, the former Bournemouth forward has been sensational and hopefully, as Wright says, he gets what is coming to him in the form of goals in Qatar.
