Chris Wood has told The Times that he hopes that Leeds United fans understand why he left the club for Burnley.

Wood joined Burnley from Leeds in the summer of 2017 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £15 million.

The 28-year-old forward was on the books of the West Yorkshire club from the summer of 2015 until the summer of 2017.

According to WhoScored, the New Zealand international scored 27 goals in the Championship during the 2016-17 season and found the net 13 times in the league in 2015-16.

The forward also scored one goal and provided one assist in three Championship matches for the Whites at the start of the 2017-18 season before his move to Burnley, according to WhoScored.

Wood told The Times: “It had been my dream since I was a kid to play in the Premier League. I had spent seven years in the Championship waiting to get that break and I couldn’t guarantee that I would get another chance. I hope that most Leeds fans understand that.”

How has Chris Wood fared at Burnley?

Wood has not taken the Premier League by storm, but the 28-year-old has held his own in the top flight of English football and has scored regularly for Burnley.

The 28-year-old scored 10 goals and provided one assist in the Premier League in 2017-18, while in 2018-19 he found the net 10 times and last season he scored 14 goals, according to WhoScored.

So far this season, Wood has scored one goal in six Premier League matches for Burnley, according to WhoScored.
