Darren Bent has warned Newcastle United that Chris Wood wouldn’t keep the club in the Premier League, as he told talkSPORT.
The former Premier League striker added that the Burnley hitman doesn’t have ‘enough goals’ in his locker to help the Magpies stay away from England’s second-tier.
Both Newcastle and Burnley are sitting in the Premier League’s relegation zone and aren’t showing any signs that they will get out of their current mess.
Before the January transfer window opened, it was well-documented that Newcastle were going to go crazy in the transfer market.
But what didn’t help matters was Callum Wilson getting injured, which puts more emphasis on them now needing a number nine.
One name that has been thrown about is from another relegation rival, but Bent doesn’t think Newcastle should push for his signature.
“I heard about this,” said Bent. “When you look at Chris Wood’s record at Burnley. 10 goals, 10 goals, 14 goals and then 12 last season. He has three in 17 this season.
“I am not sure that’s the right signing, for me. I like Chris Wood as a player.
“But if Newcastle are looking to stay in the Premier League, then Burnley aren’t going to sell one of their main men to Newcastle. I am not sure he will score enough goals in half a season to keep you in the division.”
One thing with Chris Wood is that he is an experienced pro, both in English football and on the international stage.
Plus, if Newcastle manage to secure his talents, then they would be making themselves stronger, it’s just a case of by how much?
But, one thing is for sure, they would make Burnley weaker, which is the way to go in their race to stay in the Premier League.
Added with that, Wood is also used to relegation battles, so he would be up for the fight and it’s not like this situation would be alien to him.
