Michael Owen has claimed that Virgil van Dijk is ‘more important’ to Liverpool than Kevin de Bruyne is to Manchester City.
On Wednesday night, de Bruyne showcased his world-class talents when he scored four goals during Manchester City’s 5-1 thrashing of Wolves.
The Belgian superstar, who scored his first three goals with his so-called weaker left foot, is perhaps the best midfielder in the world right now.
Liverpool’s very own ice-cool Dutchman would argue that he is the best defender in the world.
When discussing who is the best player in the Premier League right now, Owen also spoke about importance, as he put Van Dijk above de Bruyne, as he told Premier League Productions (11/05/22 at 10:20 pm).
“Virgil van Dijk, for me, I haven’t seen anything like him in terms of a centre-half,” said Owen. “I shouldn’t be saying a centre-half, should I? I should always go for the attacking players.
“But I just think de Bruyne, Manchester City aren’t the same without him. I think Van Dijk is very similar for Liverpool. When Van Dijk was out injured, look what happened to Liverpool.
“So, the importance for the team, then Van Dijk and de Bruyne, it’s very close.
“When Liverpool won the league, he (De Bruyne) only missed three games. He has missed lots of games in other seasons and they have gone on to win it.
“That’s why I favour Van Dijk as a more important player for his team.”

Both de Bruyne and Van Dijk are at the peak of their powers and they will go down as two of the Premier League’s best-ever.
Some will feel, given his talents and performances, de Bruyne should have a European Cup to his name.
Whilst someone like Van Dijk is probably worthy of more than just the one Premier League title he has so far in his career.
Either way, one of the best attributes of their games is the composure in which they play and how they make others around them much, much better.
