Speaking to the Premier League’s YouTube Channel. Peter Schmeichel has claimed that Steven Bergwijn hasn’t lived up to expectations since impressing on his debut against Tottenham.
The Manchester United legend says that he thought Bergwijn was going to take the league by storm after scoring an impressive goal against Manchester City on his debut, but unfortunately it hasn’t quite turned out that way.
“So I was actually at that game when he scored (vs Man City) and he looked like he was really going to take the Premier League by storm,” Schmeichel said.
“He’s been ok, but I also think he’s been quiet. He’s not one of those guys on the list that we’re going to talk about today that has blown me away the most I have to say that, he is obviously very young, and he has a lot of talent, but he needs to channel that talent into consistent performances like he did in that game against Man City.”

This assessment may be a little bit harsh, but Schmeichel isn’t wrong.
Bergwijn’s debut remains one of his best performances, and unfortunately, that match against Man City set an unbelievably high bar, and it’s been hard for him to reach those heights since.
Of course, he’s had his moments, he scored a wonderful goal against Manchester United last season, and he’s performed quite well at times, but he hasn’t been the breakout star many thought he would be after his incredible showing against Man City.
