Alan Shearer has admitted that he ‘didn’t realise how good’ Dan Burn is, after signing for Newcastle United in January, as he told Premier League Productions.
The St James’ Park legend added that Burn has brought ‘leadership’ qualities to Newcastle and he has also made Fabian Schar a ‘better’ player.
In recent weeks, it has been Burn that has partnered Schar at the heart of the club’s defence.
Although, that did change over the weekend when Jamaal Lascelles returned in a back three during their narrow, yet unlucky, 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
But, since swapping Brighton colours for the ones of his boyhood club, it seems as though Burn has shocked Shearer, as he explained.
“This guy Dan Burn and Schar, their partnership and understanding of the game,” said Shearer. “Especially this guy Burn, I think he has been absolutely fantastic.
“I looked at him at Brighton and I saw a good Premier League player, who is reliable. I have got to be honest. I didn’t realise how good he was, in terms of what he has brought to this Newcastle team, the leadership.
“Watch the way he’s looking around and trying to organise different players, then taking up his position to do his bit defensively. He has been a leader in that back four, ever since he has put that black and white shirt on.
“He’s actually made Schar into a better player. Yes, he has got more confidence. He looks more organised and more of a complete player. And playing with freedom.”

It’s not just Newcastle’s January signings that have made a difference, but those at the club that were struggling under Steve Bruce.
Someone like Joelinton has probably been one of the most improved players in the Premier League.
Then there is Jonjo Shelvey, who is starting to showcase the consistent performances he is able to produce.
Added with that, Schar is also looking composed at the back and Eddie Howe has also managed to get goals back out of Ryan Fraser and Joe Willock – all credit to the new man in the dugout and his coaching staff.
