Leeds United were dealt a second-successive thumping in the Premier League on Saturday.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side were thrashed 4-1 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, five days after Leicester City left Elland Road with victory by the same scoreline.
Leeds had an equaliser farcically ruled out by VAR when Patrick Bamford found the net on 17 minutes, which proved a huge decision because Palace made it 2-0 just five minutes later.
Palace went into the break with a 3-1 advantage after an own goal from Helder Costa in the final minutes of the half, but the visitors’ goalkeeper Illan Meslier was questionable.
The Portuguese winger diverted a cross past Meslier at his near post, but the young Frenchman was far too slow to react.
Here’s how Matthew Upson viewed the incident. He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “It is a wicked deflection but i think Illan Meslier’s position is too central of the goal he’s not close enough to the near post. How that squirms over the line I have no idea but he is so late in reacting he almost doesn’t anticipate or see the reaction.”
Meslier, a £5 million signing from Lorient this past summer, has enjoyed a pretty solid first season at Leeds on a permanent basis, after impressing on loan last term.
But this could well dent his confidence a little bit.
Thing is, he is only 20 years old and mistakes are inevitable when you’re still learning the game. Errors are part and parcel with his education and hopefully he learns from it.
