Arsenal legend Paul Merson says he has faith in Kai Havertz amid the attacking midfielder coming in for criticism following his arrival at the Emirates.
One of Kai Havertz‘s critics is former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, who recently questioned why Mikel Arteta brought him in on talkSPORT.
Merson, on the other hand, seems to be a fan of the player. In his Sportskeeda column, he wrote: “I also don’t see Kai Havertz as a midfielder; however, I have faith in him and he is the kind of player you want when games open up.
“It will be interesting to see how Mikel Arteta goes about using these players over the course of the new campaign.”
Havertz started Arsenal‘s 2-1 win against Nottingham Forest last weekend in midfield but spent most of his career at former club Chelsea playing up front and a bit deeper.
Kai Havertz needs time
Havertz only joined Arsenal at the end of June. The German needs to be given an opportunity to settle.
Former Chelsea star Joe Cole said last year that he wants him to be “more mean”, so adding a bit more aggressiveness to his game is also something Havertz may need to do on top of adapting to Arteta’s style if he wants to be a success at the Emirates.
People can continue to debate what the 24-year-old’s best position actually is, which is more than fair enough.
Since arriving in England back in 2020, that has not been quite clear. At Chelsea, he failed to establish himself as a top centre-forward or elite attacking midfielder.
However, what would be unfair to do is write him off straight away, which it feels like some are already doing. All things considered, then, the Germany international deserves more time in an Arsenal shirt before being truly judged.
