Leeds United put a major dent in Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League qualification hopes this afternoon.
Leeds beat the North Londoners 3-1 at Elland Road to leave Spurs sixth in the Premier League table and five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
But things might’ve gone differently for Spurs on another day.
Shortly after Son Heung-min struck in the first half to make it 1-1, Harry Kane had a brilliant goal disallowed.
The linesman flagged for offside and the decision was confirmed by a VAR check.
But television replays indicated that Kane was only offside by the smallest of margins and former Tottenham hitman Darren Bent has admitted that he ‘hates’ seeing quality goals chalked off in that fashion.
There was brilliant play from Gareth Bale, Son and Kane in the build-up to the goal though and Bent has highlighted that minor positive.
He told Optus Sports: “I hate it. I hate the decision. I know it’s offside by the letter of the law. It’s half a toenail. It’s so frustrating. A goal of that quality, all the big hitters combining, but it’s the finish at the end. I don’t think you’ll find one Leeds player who’ll complain about it [if it was given].”
Patrick Bamford went on to fire Leeds into a 2-1 half-time lead, before Rodrigo confirmed the defeat for the Lilywhites in the final quarter by adding a third.
If Chelsea win against Manchester City tonight, Tottenham, under caretaker manager Ryan Mason, will be eight points adrift of the top four with just three games to go.
