Shane Duffy has admitted that he had ‘no idea’ the Celtic fans would welcome him as warmly as they have done.
The Hoops signed one of their own last week by capturing the 28-year-old defender on a season-long loan arrangement from Brighton in the Premier League.
Duffy didn’t come through the ranks at Celtic, but the Derry-born star did grow up supporting the Parkhead club.
As a result, the Bhoys faithful have been very welcoming following the news that he had joined – for a loan fee of £2 million [Daily Record] – and Duffy told a press conference that the messages of support from his new fanbase has been simply ‘incredible’.
This is a brilliant signing for Celtic.
Duffy has almost 100 appearances in the Premier League and anybody with that level of experience should be quite an asset in the Scottish Premiership.
Neil Lennon’s side are away to Ross County on Saturday and it’ll be interesting to see if the Republic of Ireland defender is involved.
If Lennon elects for a flat back-four, Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer may continue as Celtic’s first-choice pairing in central defence, meaning Duffy may have to settle for a spot on the bench initially.
