Tim Sherwood has stated that William Troost-Ekong has had a ‘very good career’ after leaving Tottenham, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (11/12/21 at 12:10 pm).
The former Spurs academy boss shared that the Watford player was ‘released’ when he had him as a teenager in north London.
But on Friday night, the 28-year-old produced a moment of madness that cost Watford the game against Brentford.
In stoppage-time, Troost-Ekong lunged inside the penalty area and fouled Saman Ghoddo.
Bryan Mbeumo stepped up to score from the spot and help the Bees to a 2-1 win in what was a dramatic finale in the capital.
Sherwood spoke about Troost-Ekong’s decision-making being his ‘problem’ in recent weeks and what he has done since leaving Spurs many years ago.
“He’s not going through a good period, at the moment,” said Sherwood. “He has made a couple of mistakes.
“The one where he ducks under the ball against Leicester and Jamie Vardy is right there behind. A few rash decisions.
“Decision-making has been his problem. I think he has done brilliantly. I had him as a 17-year-old at Tottenham, and to be fair to him, he got released.
“He has gone away. He has had a career and he has had a very good career. But sometimes you have to stop making rash decisions, certainly, with experience, you would expect them to get it out of your system.”

When Troost-Ekong left Tottenham in 2013, he travelled across Europe to try and make a name for himself.
From playing in Holland’s second-tier to representing Udinese in Italy’s top-flight.
Those difficult roads finally resulted in Troost-Ekong heading back to English football and being snapped up by Watford.
And now, after failing to do so in Spurs colours, he is playing on a regular basis in the Premier League.
Although, his recent mistakes at the back have proven to be costly and it won’t be a surprise if he is dropped for the next game.
