Niklas Sule has explained why he decided to join Borussia Dortmund ahead of Newcastle United, who were in the race for the German international.
In an interview with Bild, the 26-year-old revealed that conversations with the Bundesliga giants impressed him, and that he was excited about the role Dortmund would offer him next season should Sule make the move from Bayern Munich.
Dortmund, who just lost 5-2 to Bayer Leverkusen in the league, have a history of signing players from Bayern who are deemed by the European giants as no use to them, with the likes of Mats Hummels, Mario Gotze and Sebastian Rode all making the switch.
And now, Sule becomes the latest player to make the move. The defender has featured regularly for Bayern this season, however, the centre-back was unable to strike a new deal with the Bavarian giants, hence his move to Dortmund much to the dismay of Newcastle.
According to Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk, the Toon were keen on Sule with the defender also expressing an interest in a move, yet Dortmund have now won the race for the German, who explained why he chose the Bundesliga side over a Premier League move.
Sule said on Dortmund: “From when Dortmund first made contact, I immediately felt that they were very interested in working with me.
“They [the club leaders] impressed me with what role I would play at Borussia Dortmund, and I had a feeling that I was wanted as a person and as a footballer.”
Dortmund perfect destination for Sule amid Newcastle interest

Sule was always going to be an ambitious signing for Newcastle, yet in Dortmund, the Bundesliga side have secured a player who could help them make a real push in stopping Bayern in the title race next season.
Whilst Sule would have been a brilliant addition to Newcastle, there’s no denying that the northeast club are just not at the stage to be luring title-winning defenders to St. James Park just yet, with more work needing to be done beforehand.
