Stan Collymore has claimed on Twitter that Steven Gerrard will be building his Aston Villa team around the qualities of John McGinn.

Gerrard left Rangers to join Aston Villa as Dean Smith’s successor on Thursday morning.

The Villans have lost their five Premier League games and are only two points clear of the relegation zone.

McGinn has been a revelation for Aston Villa since joining in 2018, culminating in earning a £45 million price-tag this past summer, but there’s been question marks over his form this season.

But Collymore is certain that Gerrard – a legendary midfielder during his playing career – will identify the Scotland international as the player to build his long-term project around.

Next level

It’s fascinating to see whether Gerrard can get McGinn back to his best.

The 27-year-old is a fine midfielder and given what the Liverpool icon knows about this role, there’s a good chance that the former Hibernian man will go to the next level.

McGinn already has a goal in him, as Gerrard obviously did during his time, and if the new Aston Villa boss can unlock that potential further then the Midlands club benefit in a massive way.
